When it was first settled in 1763, this community was a parish of Nottingham and was called North Woods. In 1773, it was incorporated as its own town and, in 1791, New Hampshire lawmakers launched a committee to lay out a road between Durham and Concord. The road, called the New Hampshire Turnpike, ran right through Northwood, leading to the town becoming a popular stop for travelers thanks to its many taverns. Northwood once had a dozen sawmills; five of them were turned into shoe factories. |
